Life Mission Recap
By Annya M. Lott
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be known to God” (Philippians 4:6)
Life Mission Month was kicked-off in a mighty prayer circle. Thirteen church congregants’ joined together with one objected: to give thanks to God! Prayer is communication with God and, as believers, we recognize our dependence upon our Creator. During the hour of power, facilitator Rev. Phillip Nelson, taught the group a prayer technique created by Dick Eastman, author of The Hour That Changes The World. Nelson explained the prayer wheel has 12 spokes that is divided into 5 minute segments. The total duration is 60 minutes including: Praise and Worship, Waiting on the Lord, Confession, Pray the Word, Watching, Intercession, Petitions, Thanksgiving, Song, Meditation, Listening, and Praise.
Praise and Worship is an expression of admiration and devotion to God. Psalm 115:1 reads, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.” As a group, we worshiped God for his sovereignty and omnipotence. We exalted him for being Lord over our lives, individually and collectively, as one church body.
Nelson, a student of prayer for 45 years, then instructed the group to wait silently on the Lord, “Prayer is a discipline. Practice to be silent and ask God how he can use you to impact the world,” said Nelson. “There are enough people in this room to change Charlotte if we were focused.” Waiting on the Lord is an act of surrender to God; it is a time to direct our whole being to God. Psalm 46:11 reads, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” It is important during this time to concentrate on God the Father, Jesus as your Redeemer and the power of the Holy Spirit.
The intercession spoke truly touched my heart; watching groups of pairs praying for each other. Intercession is the act of praying and concentrating on the needs and distress of others. Eastman writes that intercession is, “God’s method of getting his children involved in his plan for the world.”
And so goes the prayer wheel with instructions for each spoke, finally ending with praise. Interesting, the wheel starts and ends with praise. During the final praise, an act of glorifying God and trusting him with all your supplications, Eastman instructs believers to end your prayer with a strong Amen. Amen means it is true and sure, so shall it be, “This is the final spiritual act of putting God on the throne of your life,” writes Eastman. “This is where you declare: Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” (Matthew 6:13).
This was a time of authentic communion and worship to God. If you’re interested in learning more about the prayer wheel, please join us for our monthly global prayer session held every first Friday at Park Independence.
